Breathing pause identification using Kinect

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep. When such a pause occurs, the brain is signaled to wake the person sleeping and breathe in air. As a consequence, a person can wake up dozens of times an hour, imposing substantial health ramifications. In order to diagnose sleep apnea in children, an overnight test must be conducted in a sleep lab. During the test, the child is connected to several sensors which often make the child feel uncomfortable.

In this project we will use the 3D capabilities of the Kinect in order to identify a breathing pause with no need to touch the patient. We will develop and implement an algorithm which will track the chest movement of the patient and will identify a pause in this movement. By using the Kinect we will be able to conduct a cheap and comfortable sleep test in the house of the patient.
