Interactive Slideshow using Kinect

The purpose of this project is to build an interactive tour in VISL that will be displayed in a public area (in the hallway of the laboratory or in open days, etc.).

Abstract

The purpose of this project is to build an interactive tour in VISL that will be displayed in a public area (in the hallway of the laboratory or in open days, etc.). The tour will be displayed on a big screen and will present information regarding the lab and regarding ongoing or future projects. The tour is activated when a viewer or a couple of viewers are identified by the camera, and is terminated when the viewers leave the area. Controlling the tour is interactively done by hand gestures, by voice and by head movement. The tour is built in a “user friendly” way and contains instructions on how to operate the tour as well as voice alerts in critical points throughout the tour. This project makes use in the XBOX Kinect camera of Microsoft. The Kinect is actually what allows the interactivity of tour. In this project there is a combination of diverged uses of the Kinect – in one system we are using several of its features. The contents of the tour are flexible for changes from time to time – a PowerPoint presentation, independent on the project’s code, has inside of it the contents of the tour. The project has brought for us many challenges. We had to combine many abilities in one application and still keep the system reliable and robust. Also, we have faced algorithmic tasks in the field of image and video processing.
